How gapyear.com clearing worked for me
Predicted results: AAA
Acheived results: AAB
Emma Scott writes...
"I was predicted three A's at A Level, but I knew that at best I would get AAB (although by the morning of results day, I was sure it was going to be CDE!) I ended up with AAB. Because I needed an A in English to get onto my course at York, I had reconsidered my options a lot, prior to results day. So when they let me in even without the A, I had already decided that that course wasnt right for me and I turned my place down.
I had considered taking a gap year prior to applying to university, but decided against it. So the decision came on results day when I decided not to take my uni place. So when most people were on the UCAS clearing list - I was on the gapyear.com one!
I ended up going to Kenya for four and a half months. I was teaching in a school in Nairobi and found lots of time to travel around as well. Other than that, I've spent the time working to save for travelling.
To me, a gap year was a good time to travel, to go on a trip somewhere in the World. But it has become so much more to me. I don't feel as though I've been to Kenya so now I can go home and be happy that I've travelled. It has changed the way I think about everything. I had thought about working for charity in the past but, after going to Kenya, I see it as more of a definite future for me. I'm not sure in what way I want to help out yet, but my three years at university give me a lot more time to think and to get involved in this country, and then afterwards I can consider where I want to take things. I honestly think that turning down my place at uni last summer was the best decision I ever made."
